Dance Canvas Announces the 2009-2010 Season;
Calling All Emerging Choreographers
August 1, 2009 - Atlanta, GA
Dance Canvas is pleased to announce its 2nd season of thrilling performances. The 2009-2010 Dance Canvas season will introduce audiences to a new “class” of emerging professional choreographers.
The 2009-10 season kicks off on November 6th & 7th at the Woodruff Arts Center’s 14th StreetPlayhouse, in the heart of thriving Midtown Atlanta. The performance series will include works from 10 emerging professional choreographers from around the country.
In early June 2009, Dance Canvas announced its search for this year’s choreographers. Dance Canvas has a thorough application process to audition choreographers in all styles of dance. “We are very excited about the interest that we have been receiving. It is overwhelming proof that there is a definite need for a platform such as Dance Canvas,” says Angela Harris, Executive Artistic Director. “We want to showcase these new innovative talents, while giving emerging artists the resources to have their work presented to mass audiences.”
In its 2009-10 Season, Dance Canvas will also continue to develop the youth programs, DC NEXT and DC INTERNS. Dance Canvas continues its intern partnership with international recording artist, Usher’s New Look, and will host three new production interns in the fall.
Dance Canvas continues to receive rave reviews stemming from last September’s Inaugural Performance series. Dance Canvas also introduced “Urban Renaissance 2009” in April, which served as the premier of the partnership between Dance Canvas and Studio Clout Fine Arts Gallery. “Urban Renaissance” showcased an evening of interactive performances, live music, and live art, highlighted by artist Alfred Conteh’s live painting of a Dance Canvas' piece of choreography.
Dance Canvas will announce the selected choreographers in early August 2009.

Dance Canvas and Studio Clout Collaborate on “Urban Renaissance”
April 17, 2009 - Atlanta, GA
Come experience something new: an innovative night of live art, music, and dance mixed with an upscale networking vibe. Dance Canvas and Studio Clout Fine Art Gallery are pleased to announce “Urban Renaissance: a fusion of Art, Dance and Networking” on Friday, April 17th, 2009 from 7:00 – 11:00 pm.
“Our new partnership with Studio Clout will provide a unique opportunity for Atlanta to experience what I call, an ‘Arts Party’! It is an interesting concept. We want our guests to experience three different arts and meet very talented emerging artists, while networking and having a good time with colleagues and friends,” says Angela Harris, Executive Artistic Director of Dance Canvas. “We want to infuse art into everyday lives and through this collaboration I know we will pique many people’s interest.”
Dance Canvas and Studio Clout have teamed up for the first time on this event. The collaboration will follow the successful launch of the Dance Master Class series at Studio Clout.
Guests will be entertained by live music, while being visually stimulated by the work of Studio Clout featured artist, Alfred Conteh. “The visual arts and choreography will merge together at Studio Clout Fine Art Gallery.” says Studio Clout Executive Director/Curator, Linda Lima. “It will be a collaborative evening of posh entertainment! All live! All Art!”
Throughout the evening, Dance Canvas’ choreographers and dancers will tie the arts together, performing three excerpt dance pieces. The choreographers will work with Alfred Conteh to create a dance based on one of his showcased pieces of art. Another dance will be captured in art as Conteh creates a piece of work LIVE, based on the dance and the dancers. “Our guests will experience and appreciate art in a refreshingly new way. Bringing art to the mainstream without making it ‘mainstream’…I think of it as an Urban Renaissance!, ”says Harris. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
The evening will end with a “Skyline After-party”, hosted by Clout-The Network. Guests are invited to stay and share in an after-hours champagne toast with dessert, while taking advantage of the exclusive networking opportunities to meet the Gallery Owners, Artistic Directors, dancers and artists. During the Skyline After-party, guests will have access to rooftop views and an opportunity to enjoy more of Studio Clout’s eclectic ambiance. The “Skyline After-party” will continue from 11:00 pm – 12:30 am.
Tickets will go on sale on March 10th. Tickets are $30 in advance & $40 at the door. A special limited number of “Skyline After-party” Tickets will be sold at $50. All tickets can be purchased online at www.dancecanvas.com or by phone at 404-688-2787.

Dance Canvas Celebrates Successful World Premier
October 18, 2009 - Atlanta, GA

ATLANTA – Dance Canvas made its first mark on the dance community with last month’s inaugural performance series, presented at the Woodruff Arts Center’s 14th StreetPlayhouse in Atlanta. The production introduced Atlanta audiences to 9 innovative, emerging professional choreographers, and the show has already started to create a “buzz” among the dance community of Atlanta. “We were so excited for the enthusiastic response to the production. I knew the high level of dancing and choreography we were presenting, but I was eager to see how audiences would relate.” says Angela Harris, Executive Artistic Director of Dance Canvas.
And, relate, they did! Receiving standing ovations at every show, Dance Canvas’ choreographers were able to draw in a large cross section of the community, and following the show, accolades and recognition came pouring in.
"I want to praise the company for such a spectacular assortment of dance. Each piece was inspiring, sexy and moving!" - Candi Cross, Managing Editor, Institute of Industrial Engineers
"I would like to thank you for putting together such an eclectic mixture of talent that portrays the true face of the choreographers here in Atlanta."
– Julia Simoes, Visiting Instructor: Classical Languages, Georgia State University
"There was a piece for everyone...And it was one fantastic piece after another!"
"Every 10 minutes you saw a new piece with a diverse group of dancers, costumes and music. Perfect for those of us with short attention spans!" - Laura Hamm, Consultant, Coxe, Curry & Associates
Dance Canvas was also proud to announce a partnership with Grammy Award Winning recording artist, Usher’s New Look Foundation. Through the partnership, Dance Canvas was able to provide internship opportunities to high school and college age students. Two students from Usher’s “Mogul in Training” program, Mia Barnett (a freshman at Georgia State University) and Stephen Royce (a senior at Grady High School), worked with Dance Canvas staff on stage management and directing projects.
Dance Canvas’ goal was to attract savvy young audience members to the performances. Each show included either an after party or choreographer meet and greet, in order for Dance Canvas to foster a bond between the performers and the broad array of patrons. “We want people to walk out of our show with a closer attachment to the art form,” comments Harris, “Our show created new dance critics!”
Earlier this summer, Dance Canvas announced an open call for choreographer submissions. “We were pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of submissions from choreographers across the country. We could only select ten for our fall 2008 show. However due to the demand we are steadily preparing to have at least two performance series per year.” says Harris.
The presenting choreographers for the Dance Canvas’ Inaugural Performance Series were: Jelani Jones (Jelani Jones Dance Company - Atlanta, GA), Koya Craddock (New Orleans, LA), Robert Mason (Atlanta, GA), Alison Seidenstricker (ASEID - New York, NY), Angella Foster (Refuge Dance Company - Atlanta, GA), Sarah Boies (Baton Rogue, LA), Kristy Nillson (Atlanta, GA), D. Norris (Atlanta, GA), and Angela Harris (Atlanta, GA).
